THE NAME OF JESUS

The greatest and most powerful name in heaven and on earth is the name of Jesus. So, today we will be looking at “THE NAME OF JESUS.” The name of Jesus stands out as a name above all other names (Phil. 2:9-11).

All that God has - His Power, authority, character, integrity, honour, majesty, might, authority is behind that name.

The Name of Jesus stands for all of His authority and power. There is salvation (deliverance) in that Name, Jesus. There is promotion in that Name. There is healing in that Name. There is prosperity in that Name. There is protection in that Name.

The Name, Jesus, has all the authority, all the power, all the dignity, all the majesty, and all the glory that Jesus the Person has.

There is power and authority in the Name of Jesus.  The authority is like the uniform of the army officer.

But the power is like the “Pump Action” in his hand to force you to do what he wants you to do.

Proper knowledge of the power and authority in the Name of Jesus Christ will enable you to effectively exercise that authority.

What is in a name? Matthew 1:21  says, “She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”

The name Jesus is similar to the Hebrew word for Joshua, which means “the Lord is salvation”.

What is the reason for that name? For he shall save His people from their sins. Christ came to save His people, not in their sins, but from their sins; to purchase for them, not a liberty to sin, but a liberty from sins, to redeem them from all iniquity (Tit. 2:14); and so to redeem them from among men (Rev. 14:4) to Himself, who is separate from sinners.

Not the nation of the Jews only (He came to His own, and they received Him not), but all who were given Him by the Father’s choice, and all who had given themselves to Him by their own.

Note, those whom Christ saves He saves from their sins; from the guilt of sin by the merit of his death, from the dominion of sin by the Spirit of His grace.

In saving them from sin, he saves them from wrath and the curse, and all misery here and hereafter.

There is such power in the name of Jesus that it can enable those who invoke His name in faith to perform miracles (Mk. 16:17-18).

The name of Jesus is great because:1) He inherited a great name, 2) Of His achievements, 3) It was conferred (bestowed) upon Him.

1. Jesus got His name by inheritance. “…4 Being made so much better than the angels, as He hath BY INHERITANCE obtained A MORE EXCELLENT NAME than they.” (Heb. 1:1-6).

Jesus inherited a greater Name than any angelic being. As Son, He is heir of all things. Jesus is God the Father speaking to us. By inheritance He obtained a more excellent name.

When did He inherit it? Jesus did not inherit anything in Heaven before He came to this earth, because He already had everything. He did not inherit it when He came to the earth, because the Epistles to the Philippians said that He stripped Himself of all honour and glory.

When then did he inherit His name? (Heb. 1:4-5). This verse tells us when Jesus inherited His Name.

It was when God the Father said to Him, “Thou art My Son, this day have I begotten thee.” This day! That’s when it happened.

When was Jesus begotten? Most people think that He was begotten when He came into the world as a babe in Bethlehem.

No! No! Begotten means born. The Son of God was not born as He took on flesh. He always pre-existed with the Father.

He just took upon Himself a body (Heb. 10:5; Jn. 1:1, 14).). “…This day have I begotten thee” is not talking about the day He took upon Himself a body.

Then what day is He talking about?  “…Thou art my Son, THIS DAY HAVE I BEGOTTEN THEE(Acts 13:33).

When was it that Jesus was begotten? He was begotten the very day God the Father raised Him up from the dead.

Why did He need to be begotten or born? Because Jesus became as we were, separated from God the Father. He tasted spiritual death for every man. His Spirit (inner man) went to hell in our place.

“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man” (Heb. 2:9).

Physical death would not remove our sins. He tasted death for every one – spiritual death.

Jesus was the first person ever to be Born Again. Why did His spirit need to be Born Again? Because He was estranged from the Father.

The moment Jesus took our sins on Him, He got separated from the Father and died spiritually.

Remember that on the cross, Jesus cried out saying, “My God, My God, why has thou forsaken Me?”

The very moment you sin against God, you die spiritually. That does not mean that you ceased to exist.

It means that you are immediately out of fellowship and out of relationship with God the Father. That was what happened to Jesus when He carried the sin of the whole world.

2. Jesus got His name by Bestowal. “…9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name(Phil. 2:5-11).

What is bestowal? Bestowal is the act of conferring an honour or presenting a gift to someone.

God the Father gave Jesus a Name that is above every other name anywhere in the entire universe. God the Father not only gave Jesus a Name before which every being in the three worlds must bow and confess His lordship, but God seated Him in the highest place in the universe, at His own right hand, and made Him to be head over all things. For the benefit of the Church! (Eph. 1:22).

God the Father has made this investment for the benefit of the church. He has made this deposit on which the church has the right to draw for her every need. We have the right to use that Name: Against our enemies. In our petitions. That Name belongs to us – the church!

3. Jesus got His name by conquest. By His conquest of these principalities, powers, mights, and dominions, Jesus obtained that Name.

“And (Jesus) having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it” (Col. 2:15).

These are the same principalities and powers spoken of in Ephesians 6:12.

The principalities and powers we are wrestling against are the same ones He overcame, that He spoilt, that He put to nought, that He reduced to nothing. Jesus has reduced them to nothing. No wonder Jesus said, “In My Name they will cast out demons”!

Jesus defeated Satan and his cohorts in their own territory. The conquest that Jesus made of the devil, of sin, of sickness and disease is wrapped up in the Name.

The Name, when we use it, will bring into reality in our lives what Jesus has already accomplished. This is likely the reason the devil has fought so hard to keep us from knowing this truth.

“Who (God the Father) hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son” (Col. 1:13).

It was in His spoiling the principalities and powers, putting them to nought, overcoming them, defeating them that He delivered us from the power (authority) of Satan. Satan has no authority to dominate the Christian or the church any more. When you know this truth, and know that the Name belongs to you, you can put Satan on the run every time.
