How do we best handle disagreements in our marriage?
a) We should handle disagreements with an attitude of love rather than getting even or winning at any cost.
1 Corinthians 13:4-5 . . . Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged.
Colossians 3:14 . . . The most important piece of clothing you must wear is love. Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony.
Proverbs 10:12 . . . Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love covers all offenses.
Remember that though you are disagreeing with someone, your opinion must line up with the Word of God.
For instance, if a couple are disagreeing with regards the church they will attend, should the husband compel the wife to go to that particular church he has chosen?
Again, if the couple gained admission to study Witchcraft in the university, and the wife rejects the offer, should the husband force her to accept the admission?
b) We should handle disagreements by approaching our discussion with the attitude that Jesus might have had.Romans 15:5 . . . May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other-each with the attitude of Christ Jesus toward the other.
c) We should handle disagreements with humility, recognizing that our opinion might not be the right one.Proverbs 13:10 . . . Pride leads to arguments; those who take advice are wise.
d) We should handle disagreements by remembering the importance of unity, which is far better than the hollow satisfaction of winning an argument.Mark 3:25 . . . A home divided against itself is doomed.Amos 3:3 . . . Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?
e) We should handle disagreements with gentle words to one another that keep tempers from flaring and prevents us from saying things we’ll regret later.Proverbs 15:1 . . .
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger.
Memory Verse: “God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.”
“Those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of goodness” (Matt 5:9; Jam. 3:18).
