Today we are sharing on “THE UNSPEAKABLE GIFT!” “Thanks be unto God (the Father) for His Unspeakable Gift” (2 Cor. 9:15, KJV).
At this time of the year, people all over the world gather from far and near to their various ancestral homes to celebrate. And you may ask, “What is the true reason for this celebration?” They are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. The birth of Jesus Christ heralds the entrance of God into human history. Some 2000 years ago, the Dayspring from on high, visited humanity.
In Luke 1:78, the Bible says, “…the Dayspring (the Fountain of living waters, the Bread of life, The I am that I am, Jehovah) from on high has visited us.
What usually happens during the celebration of the birth of Christ? During such times, many people give gifts to their loved ones and appreciate receiving gifts too. However, many never appreciate the greatest “Gift” of all times given to mankind.
Jesus Christ is the greatest Gift of God the Father to mankind! In John 3:16 Jesus said, “For God so loved the world, that He GAVE His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
How does the Bible describe this gift? The Bible describes this “Gift” as “UNSPEAKABLE” (2 Cor. 9:15, KJV). There is no language adequate enough to describe the glory, the wonder, the richness, the splendour of this GIFT that God the Father has given unto men. NIV says that this gift is “INDESCRIBABLE!” The New Living Translation says that this Gift is TOO WONDERFUL FOR WORDS. This Gift is too wonderful to explain! There are no words in the dictionary good enough to qualify this Gift. English Standard Version says that this Gift is INEXPRESSIBLE!” Good News Translation says that this Gift is PRICELESS. Weymouth New Testament says that this Gift is UNSPEAKABLY PRECIOUS.
Which Gift is this Scripture really talking about? The Scripture is talking about the Gift of Jesus Christ! In John 4:10, Jesus said to the woman at the well, “If thou knowest the GIFT of God and who it is that saith to thee, Give Me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of Him, and He would have given thee LIVING WATER.”
Jesus is God's perfect, indescribable Gift. And the amazing thing is that not only are we able to receive this gift that is too wonderful for words, but we are able to share Him with others.
More important than making our homes ready, we need to make sure our hearts are ready, both to receive Christ's love and to extend it to others.
When we do, our arms can be the arms of Jesus as we reach out to others in love. Our voice can be the voice of Jesus as we share a word of encouragement and hope with others. Our hands can be the hands of Jesus that bring healing and comfort to those in need.
What is the implication of the word “the” in John 4:10? The word “THE” qualifies this Gift as the ultimate (greatest) Gift that can ever be given to mankind.
What is it that makes Jesus the unspeakable Gift of the season?
In Isaiah 9:6 the Bible says, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given (Jn. 3:16); and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
a) He is called Wonderful. Wonderful means full of wonder! Amazing! He does wonders.
b) Counsellor. A counsellor is one who advises people. Jesus takes care of the decisions of life. He counsels you according to His Word. He leads you in the path of righteousness. He leads you beside the still waters (Ps. 23; Rom. 8:14; Rom. 8:1-2).
c) Mighty God. He takes care of the demands of life. We need help. We need power. We need His ability to make it in life. You cannot make it in this life without the power of the Holy Spirit. You will fail if you do things by your own strength (Zech. 4:6; 1 Sam. 2:9).
d) Everlasting Father. He takes care of your future. We will all live forever. But what matters most is where you will spend your life in eternity. Is it in Heaven or in hell? Jesus came and paid the debt He did not owe so that you can make it to heaven. If you reject Him, you can never make it to Heaven. You have a Father in Heaven who is always there for you.
e) Prince of Peace. He takes care of the challenges/disturbances of life. He brings peace to our lives even in the midst of storm (Phil. 4:6-7). Jesus rebuked the storm saying, “Peace, be still! (Mk. 4:39).
In an attempt to describe this Gift to man, God moved upon the angels to describe Him to:
1) The shepherds in the field. A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord is born! (Lk. 2:8-15).
2) Virgin Mary. A Son, and shall call His name JESUS….! (Lk. 1:26-33).
3) Joseph, the fiancé of Virgin Mary. A Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins! (Matt. 1:18-23).
4) God also moved upon His prophets like Isaiah to describe this unspeakable Gift (Isa. 9:6).
As a child, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The word “born” speaks of His Humanity. As a Son, Jesus was given at Calvary to be crucified. The word “given” speaks of His Deity.
And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Notice that there is no “and” between Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. That is to say that that is one long continuous name.
