KNOWING JESUS

In this season, people are celebrating the birthday of a person they don’t really know. At its best, they know about Jesus, but they do not really know Him because they have no revelation of Him.

So today, as we celebrate the birthday of our Lord and Saviour, we want to talk about “KNOWING JESUS.”

That I MAY KNOW HIM, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death” (Phil. 3:10).

We must realize that it is the will of God the Father for His children to know Jesus Christ personally. Jesus said, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee (God the Father) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (Jn. 17:3).

Not knowing Jesus will cause you to go into captivity. Jesus said, “Therefore, My people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge (they do not know Me)….” (Isa. 5:13).

Not knowing Jesus will cause you to be destroyed. Jesus said, “My people are being destroyed because they don’t know Me…” (Hos. 4:6; NLT).

Knowing Jesus will make you strong, and cause you to do exploits for Him. The Bible says, “…but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits” (Dan. 11:32).

Knowing Jesus will bring total freedom to your life. Jesus said, “And ye shall KNOW THE TRUTH, and the truth shall make you free” (Jn. 8:32).

Who is the truth? The Word of God is the truth. Jesus prayed to the Father saying, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy Word is truth(Jn. 17:17).

Who is the Word? Jesus is the Word wearing human flesh. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (Jn. 1:1-6, 1:10-14).

“WHO IS THIS?” is the question people have been asking over the centuries.

i) People asked the question: Who is this?

In John 12:32-34 Jesus said, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me. 33 This He said, signifying what death He should die. 34 THE PEOPLE answered Him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth forever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? WHO IS THIS SON OF MAN?

ii) The men at the table in a dinner in Simon’s house asked the same question.

Jesus said, “I tell you, her sins - and they are many - have been forgiven, so she has shown Me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” 48 Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 The men at the table said among themselves, “WHO IS THIS MAN, that He goes around forgiving sins?” (Lk. 7:47-49).

iii) The scribes and the Pharisees asked the same question.

“And it came to pass on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18 And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. 19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. 20 And when he saw their faith, He said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? (Lk. 5:17-21)

iv) His 12 disciples asked the same question.

In Luke 8:22, after Jesus rebuked the wind and calmed the storm, the disciples said to one another, “WHO IS THIS MAN, that even the winds and the waves obey Him?”

v) Even kings like Herod asked the same question.

Luke 7:7-9 says, “When reports of Jesus’ miracles reached Herod Antipas, he was worried and puzzled because some were saying, “This is John the Baptist come back to life again.” 8 Others were saying, “It is Elijah or some other ancient prophet risen from the dead.”9 “I beheaded John,” Herod said, “so WHO IS THIS MAN about whom I hear such strange stories?”

vi) A whole city asked the same question. When Jesus triumphantly marched into Jerusalem, the whole city was so moved that they were asking the question saying, WHO IS THIS?" (Matt. 12:1-10).

How can one really know Jesus? You know Jesus:

A) By revelation. Jesus asked His disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” (Matt. 16:13).

And His disciples answered saying, “Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets” (Matt. 16:14).

Then Jesus asked each one of His disciples saying,BUT WHOM SAY YE THAT I AM? (Matt. 16:15)

Out of the 12 disciples only Peter knew Jesus Christ. Others knew about Jesus, but they did not know Jesus.

And Simon Peter answered and said,Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God(Matt.16:16).

How did Apostle Peter know the correct identity of Jesus Christ? He knew Jesus Christ by the revelation given to him directly by God the Father.

And Jesus answered and said unto Peter, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not REVEALED it (who I am) unto thee, but My Father which is in Heaven” (Matt. 16:17).

It is only by revelation that you can know Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “All things are delivered to Me of My Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and He to whom the Son will REVEAL Him(Lk. 10:22).

When you capture the revelation of the Person of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, you can do the impossible.

Examples of people that had/received a revelation of Jesus Christ abound in the Scriptures:

a)      Abraham received the revelation of the Person, Jesus Christ. That was why he against hope believed in hope. That was why he was fully persuaded that God would do what He said He would do (Rom. 4:17-24).

b)      Job received a revelation of Jesus Christ. That was why he refused to offend God even in the face of the terrible afflictions that came upon him. He knew that many are the afflictions of the righteous but God delivers him from them all (Ps. 34:19).

Job said, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him, for I know that my Redeemer liveth” (Job 13:15).

c)      The woman with the issue of blood for 12 years received a revelation of the Person, Jesus Christ. That was why she said, “If only I could touch the helm of His garment, I will be made whole” (Mk. 5:24-34).

d)      Apostle Peter had a revelation of the Person of Jesus Christ. That was why he walked on water (Matt. 14:22-32).

e)      Apostle Paul received a personal revelation of Jesus Christ.

In Galatians 1:12 Paul said, “For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

Ephesians 3:3-4 Paul said, “How that by revelation He made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ).”

f)       Apostle John also had a revelation of Jesus Christ.

Revelations 1:1 says, “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto Him, to shew unto His servants things which must shortly come to pass; and He sent and signified it by His angel unto his servant John.”

B) Another way you can know Jesus is through His Words. The Bible says, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he…” (Prov. 23:7).

In Matthew 12:34, Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

In a number of places in the Scriptures Jesus took time to introduce Himself. He said, “I AM…:”

1. From above!

In John 8:23 Jesus said unto them, “Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.”

In John 3:31 John the Baptist testified saying, “He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: He that cometh from heaven is above all.”

2. The Bread of Life! In John 6:35 Jesus said, “I am the bread of life...”

In John 6:51 Jesus said, “I am the l iving bread which came down from heaven...

3. The Light of the world! In John 8:12 Jesus said, “I am the light of the world...

4. He! In John 8:23-24 Jesus said, “...I am He...

6. The Way, the Truth, and the Life! In John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life...

7. The Good Shepherd! In John 10:14 Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd...”

8. The Resurrection and the Life! In John 11:25-26 Jesus said unto her, “I am the resurrection, and the life...

9. The True Vine! John 15:1 says, “I am the true vine ...”

In John 15:5-7 Jesus said, “I am the vine, ye are the branches:

10. The Alpha and the Omega! In Revelations 1:8 Jesus said, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

11. The Root and the Offspring of David! In Revelations 22:16 Jesus said, “...I am the root and the offspring of David ...”

12. The Bright and Morning Star! In Revelations 22:16 Jesus said, “...I am the bright and morning star.”

Beloved, you are carrying all the burdens you are carrying right now because you neither have a personal revelation of who Jesus Christ is nor do you know or understand what He said concerning:

a)      Your burdens (Matt. 11:28-30; Ps. 55:22; 1 Pet. 5:7),
b)      Your health (Ex. 15:26; Isa. 53:4-5; 1 Pet. 2:24; Jam. 5:14-16; 3 Jn. v. 2),
c)      Overcoming power (1 Jn. 5:14-15; 1 Jn. 4:4; Rom 8:31; Lk. 10:19; Mk. 16:15-18), fear (2 Tim. 1:7; Jn. 14:27),
d)      Success (Jer. 29:11; Josh. 1:8; Ps. 1:1-3), protection (Eccl. 10:8; Zech. 2:5; Col. 3:3; Isa. 54:17), anxiety (Phil. 4:6-7; Jn. 14:1, 27),
e)      Frustration (3 Jn. v 2; Ps. 25:27; Ps. 72:7; Gal. 3:13-14, 29). Don’t you know that Jesus said, “Prosperity is the reward of the righteous?” (Prov. 13:21).

No matter what you are going through right now, all you need is the revelation of the Person of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. A revelation of Jesus Christ will bring your situation to an immediate halt because Jesus is everything you want Him to be to you at any point in time. Are you in need? He is your Provider. Are you sick? He is your Healer. Are you lonely? He is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother (Prov. 18:24). He is your Righteousness.  He is your wisdom. He is your sanctification. He is your Redeemer (1 Cor. 1:30). He is your Saviour (Acts 4:12), etc.

You are still sick because you have not received the revelation of the fact that He is Jehovah Rapha. You are in need because you have not received the revelation of the fact that He is EL-Shaddai. He is Jehovah Jireh. You are afraid because you have not received a revelation of the fact that He is your security – your shield and buckler (Col. 3:3; Isa. 54:17; Ps. 91:4; Ps. 23:4-6; Isa. 43:2).

Shield protects you in three directions. But buckler protects you all round – north, south, east and west. A revelation of who the Lord Jesus Christ is will put you permanently on the side of victory.
